In the Summer of 2010 Troop 934 sent a crew (623-E4) to Philmont Scout Ranch. After flying 3/4 the way across the country we had a adventure filled pre-trip. In Denver we attended a Rockies game; in Colorado Springs we visited the Air Force Academy, the Indian Cliff Dwellers, and finished with the "Garden of the Gods". Then the next day we had a full day of whitewater rafting trip down the Browns Canyon section on the Arkansas River. The next day over we biked 20 miles down the 14,000 foot Pikes Peak and revisited the Garden of the Gods.

After all of that we then were able to get to the meat of our adventure at Philmont.

I've been gathering the pictures and adding some maps and patches to help divide the days. I still have the hope of getting a few more pictures and will update if I get some more. The photo album has over 800 pictures, but I have culled just as many. If you have some time to spend check out our "Summit of Scouting" adventure. Click below to see the photo album.

Sea Base 2010

In the summer of 2010 Troop 934 sent 17 Scouts and Scouters down to the Florida Keys and the BSA Sea Base. They took part in the High Adventure Sea Exploring program. Below is the description offered at the BSA Sea Base web site.

SEA EXPLORING (Keys Tall Ship)

Designed for larger groups (either a council contingent or a larger troop), offering your crew the opportunity to experience a sailing adventure of yesteryear. These are large vessels, 75 feet or more, normally gaff-rigged topsail schooners, fully equipped and prepared to provide an unforgettable adventure snorkeling the beautiful Keys' reefs, fishing, and hands-on sailing as well as a port-o-call in Key West.

For a hands-on sailing adventure voyage, one that is exciting, ruggedly challenging, and excellent for larger groups, pack your sea bag for the Sea Exploring program. This is an eight day event.

Sea Base 2010

2010 Webelos Trip

In November we had a wonderful trip with the Pack 934 Webelos. We went to Camp Raven Knob and spent the weekend at Cold Creek Camp site and the Kyle Johnson Shelter. Our older Scouts helped the Webelos with their Readymen requirements and assisted our first year Boy Scouts with advancement requirements. Everybody had a chance to play in Mountain Men games. Lots of really good food and great times.

Fall Fellowship 2010

Fall Fellowship at Camp Raven Knob was a great success. A great turnout, election of Lodge and Chapter offices,patch trading,tasty food(and lots of it), and loads of fun. Troop 934 had three of its Scouts elected to office for the Elauwit Chapter. Andy was elected VCA (Vice Chief of Administration), Philip was elected to VCECA (Vice Chief of Elections and Camping Activities), and David is the new VCP (Vice Chief of Publication). Congratulations!

Creeper Trail BikeTrip

What could be better than a 17 mile downhill bike ride on the Virginia Creeper Trail? Not anything our intrepid Scouts could think of. It is a beautiful ride that starts at Whitetop and ends in Damascus. We then had the opportunity to play in Beartree Lake, and this gave us a chance to reinforce the "Buddy System". The food was great with wonderful cobblers by Ricki, tasty bacon by Justin and Kyle, and fluffy pancakes courtesy of Philip and Steven. Our new SPL Evan helped to make this a very successful adventure.

Veteran's Day Parade

It was a great way for the boys to learn about what our Veterans did for our country.

We again went to Camp Grimes for our November Webelos trip and once again had a great time. The week before was filled with rain but on our weekend it was great weather. We were prepared for 80 people so we put together a special Scout Cook Crew to cook for them all. Our wonderful Scoutmaster (H2) even made each boy a special apron to signify their special position as part of the “Cook Crew”. They were led by Jay C. with long time Scouter Mr. Werkman providing coaching and encouragement. It started with hot dogs and kielbasa on Friday night and continued until lunch on Sunday.

The Ravens were able to finish many of their rank advancement requirements by making a fire, going on a hike, and preparing and cooking a meal over fire on Saturday. The Troop provided the Webelos the opportunity to earn their Outdoorsman Activity Badge. Then Webelos had a chance to participate in Highland Games with the Troop. We had a nice flag retirement ceremony on Saturday night along with a hearty meal of Chili and Beef Stew followed by Dutch Oven Cobblers.

On Sunday the Webelos started their day with a mountain man breakfast cooked by our Cook Crew. Then it was on to our day hike around Camp Grimes. We finished up with a Chapel service provided by our Chaplain Assistant Ryan K. It was a nice ending to our weekend with the Webelos.

Where: Camp Grimes (Charlotte’s version of Raven Knob)

Why: Good Times, Good Food and Great Scout Fellowship

What: Spending our last weekend of the year at an excellent Scout Camp. The Troop leaders will provide fine dining for all. H2 will lead the exciting Highland Games (kilts optional) with a strenuous tug of war to end the festivities. Take part in teaching Scout skills to Webelos as we start them on the path to being a Boy Scout. Free time to play (basketball, football, Frisbee or whatever else you can imagine to do). The older Scouts will be able to do a COPE program that will include: Rock Climbing, Rappelling, Zip Lines, Obstacle Course and Team Building. We will end our stay on Sunday with a hike to further explore Camp Grimes.

Highland Games Highlights:

Caber Toss: The throwing of a young tree trunk used as a trial of strength in a Scottish sport.

Shot Put: A field event in which a rock is heaved for distance.

Hammer Throw: A field event in which a rock is attached to a wood handle and is thrown for distance.

Tug-of-War: A contest in which two teams pull against each other at opposite ends of a rope with the object of pulling the middle of the rope over a mark on the ground.

Carver's Gap Treks

We had a huge backpacking trip at the end of May with over 60 Scouts and Scouters and 6 Treks. After leaving Winston-Salem we spent the night at Roan Mountain State Park and the boys did a great job of setting up camp in the dark. The next day we broke camp and started to put the Treks at their trail heads. I drove the Pfun Trek to their starting point at Iron Mountain--you can check out their pictures in the post below this one. Big Brown got a little ornery at Carvers Gap but we did get her restarted so she could pick up the rest of the crews so they could start their journeys up from the Gap to the Balds (oh the jokes I could make about some of the leaders here). The Ravens were hiking to the Stan Murray Shelter Area. It was 3 Treks of 22 first-time backpackers and 9 leaders to guide them. Another Trek of slightly older scouts went to the Overmountain Shelter. Both of these groups backtracked on Sunday and exited the trail at Carvers Gap. The older Scouts went from Carvers Gap to 19E and that is a classic hike. On the way we meet a "through" hiker with the trail name Route 66. He has a blog on the Trail Journal. I was told by one Scout that our efforts to start Big Brown were captured on video by a hiker and they might appear on You Tube.

Being involved in the logistics of getting everybody on the trail I was a little late getting started on my hike and I had to rush to catch up with my trek but I did get some great pictures of the Balds on my way up. Most of my early pictures are of the scenery, which is wonderful. I caught up with my crew and was able to take lunch at Grassy Ridge at an elevation of 6165 Feet. The Ravens did a great job on the hike and we had a super camp site at the Stan Murray Shelter. On Sunday we took a group of Ravens that were ready to travel fast so I could pick up the Pfun Frolic Tour at Hughes Gap. We made great time and I took them back to the central meeting place back in the Roan Mountain Camp Grounds at a beautiful creek side shelter were my crew began to prepare lunch for the guys and gal coming off the trail. We got everybody off the trails and gave them a hot lunch and packed up to come back home. It was so cool to give so many boys their first chance to backpack and to have the older boys get a chance to push father then they had ever been before. Roan Mt 09

Mr. Pfun's Pfrolic

This was the only Trek from our May backpacking trip that did not start at Carver's Gap. It was led by our own Mr. Pfun and he was followed by his merry band of backpackers. This was my favorite group because it had all the elements of a great learning experience for the four first-time backpackers in the Trek. Two very experienced Boy Scouts were on the trip plus two very senior scout leaders. We also added in a new leader who could learn the ropes from the Scouters who have been around for a long time. The new backpackers had not been able to hike when they were Ravens so this was their first hike. They hiked from Iron Mountain to Hughes Gap (over eight miles on the AT). Mr.Pfun provided most of the pictures with a few taken by me when I dropped them off at the trail head. Click on the picture below and enjoy.

Roan mountain 09 Flyer

Backpacking at Roan Mountain TN – May 29-31, 2009
Spend a nice weekend in May hiking the Appalachian Trial near beautiful Roan Mtn on the NC-Tennessee line. We’ll spend Friday night in Roan Mtn St Park in Tennessee and then depart for a 2 days of hiking above 5,000 ft on the AT.

Space is limited and is first come first served. Sign ups begin tonight, May 11th and end next week.
Getting there – When & where (current plans are to hike rain or shine!)
Trip cost is $15.00 per person
Bring dinner in a bag (from home or fast food place) to eat on the bus trip up. Bring money for snacks at Friday rest stop.
Each scout needs to provide their own meals for Sat Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner and Sunday breakfast.
Sunday lunch provided by the Troop.

4:45 pm Arrive at Mt.Tabor UMC parking lot
5:30 pm Bus / vans departure
7:30 pm Scheduled restroom /snack stop
8:30 pm Arrive at Roan Mountain TN State Park Group Campground

Saturday
7:00 am All Patrols will awake, eat breakfast, break down tents, pack gear.
8 -10:00 am Patrols depart for individual treks.
3- 4:00 pm Arrive at group campsites and set up camp.

Sunday
7:00 am Patrols will awake, eat breakfast, break down tents, pack gear.
8:00 am Patrols will resume treks to rendezvous points
1:00 pm All Patrols will have a target return time to the rendezvous point by 1:00 pm. Lunch will be provided at that point
2:30 pm All gear will be loaded in the trailer and all vehicles depart for home.
5:30 pm Expected arrival time back at Mt.Tabor UMC

Hiking Safety

We went over hiking safety in our last meeting but it is good to go over safety issue again. Check out this Boy Scout video. Let's be ready for our Roan Mountain backpacking trip.

Tenderfoot Requirement #5: Explain the rules of safe hiking, both on the highway and cross-country, during the day and at night. Explain what to do if you are lost.

Bike Trip 2009

Another cool trip that gave many Scouts their first chance at a loooong bike ride (over 25 miles). One of the things I love about the Boy Scouts is the opportunity for many kids to have a unique experience. I know my son has ridden more miles on his two Scout bike trips than he has in his entire life with the added benefit of gorgeous views with his buddies beside him on the trail. My bet would be that over 75 percent of our kids did 20 more miles in one day than they have ever done in any other day of their life. It is quite fulfilling to me as a leader to see these Scouts discover that their abilities are greater than they know.

Mr. Brown found a wonderful campsite for us that was right on the New River. One of the great added benefits of this riverside camp was that the burbling gurgling rumbling sounds of the river drowned out the sounds of talkative scouts and snoring leaders as we slept at night. Saturday morning we had breakfast and loaded up and headed for our start point just north of Galax. As we unloaded the bikes we them bikes to check that they were trail-ready. This pre-hike inspection ensured that all the bikes made it through the long ride. We had Mr. Brown and Mr. Guthrie drive with the van to provide repair service, hydration support, and best of all, to meet us halfway with lunch. They missed the beautiful vistas, the railroad trestles and tunnels that we rode through on our ride. We had the opportunity to ride right into our camp at the end of the ride and it was a great feeling to get off that hard bike seat. Of the 38 of those who started the 25 mile plus trip - WE ALL MADE IT!!!

That night one Patrol made something they called Tornado Lasagna. It seems that instead of layered lasagna it is all put together and mixed as if in a blender but they said it tasted great. Another Patrol made Ziploc ice cream and some the vultures started to hovering around and begging for a taste. The Leaders made enough spahetti to feed the Troop but we had to eat it ourselves because the Patrols made their own suppers. We didn’t want to deprive them of the thrill of eating their own cooking!

I don't know about the boys but I'd love to do this trip again.

Morrow Mountain

What an exciting trip we had to Morrow Mountain. Nearly 60 Scouts and leaders filled "Big Brown" and the church van so personal vehicles were needed to get everybody to the park. The trailer was filled to the top with Troop gear, food and personal gear. Mr Smith and I were the Trip leaders and we agreed it was a great Scout weekend.The instructor patrol worked with the Ravens to setup their tents on Friday night and then taught the new Scouts how to cook using the Coleman Camp Stoves on Saturday and Sunday morning.

Things I thought were great:

The Ravens getting to ride in "Big Brown" for the first time. It is a rite of passage for all Troop 934 members.
The Ravens setting their tents up for the first of many times in the dark.
Watching the oldest Scouts working with the newest Scouts to get breakfast on the table.
Scouts teaching other Scouts during the Fishing Merit Badge session.
After losing their hooks while fishing I watched a couple of Ravens used their new skill of the improved cinch knot to tie a fishing hook to their fishing line.
Boys handling a wiggling worm for the first time.
Scouts scaling, cleaning, gutting and fileting the fish they were going to eat that night.
The new boys being taught knife and axe safety so they could earn their Totin' Chip before summer camp.

Like I told the Ravens: Think of all the things you did this weekend that most of your friends at school have never done. How many have slept in a tent that they set up without their parents being there? How many have prepared a fish so they could eat it that night? How many have ever used an axe to cut up firewood or made their own breakfast and cleaned up afterwards?

This is the start of a great journey for these Ravens.

Spend at least one night on a patrol or troop campout. Sleep in a tent you have helped pitch.

On Monday night we had the Ravens practice with 3 boy leaders who showed them how to put up our Troop tents. On Friday night they will have their chance to do it themselves outside and it will be their home for the weekend. We have some older boys lined up to help with the pitching of the tents as needed.

On the campout, assist in preparing and cooking one of your patrol's meals. Tell why it is important for each patrol member to share in meal preparation and cleanup, and explain the importance of eating together.

On the trip the Ravens will prepare 2 breakfasts (,pancakes and bacon, and eggs and sausage ). They will work on setting up a sandwich lunch and for supper they will clean a fish, prepare it and then help cook it. They will also help with cleanup after the meals--the older Scouts will assist them with these chores.

I don’t think any meal taste as good as one that you prepare for yourself and your buddies.

The buddy system is a way for Scouts to look after one another, especially during outdoor adventures. When your troop goes swimming, for example, each Scout will be assigned a buddy. You keep track of what your buddy is up to, and he knows at all times where you are and how you are doing. Now and then a Scout leader might call for a buddy check. That means you must immediately hold up the hand of your buddy. If anyone is missing, everyone will know it right away. The buddy system should always be used when a troop or patrol is hiking, camping, and participating in any aquatics activities. It's a way of sharing the good times and preventing the bad. You can use the buddy system when you go places in your community, as well, to help keep yourself and your buddies safe.

A few months after her son died, Jan Jones gathered the strength to sort through piles and piles of his outdoor gear.
A family friend who was helping Jones surveyed the spread of carabiners, ropes, stuff sacks, packs and paddles.
"You know, Mrs. Jones," the friend said. "He really was a gearhead."
Indeed, Trey Jones loved his gear.
And he put that gear to use, most notably during summer trips to Philmont Scout Ranch, a 138,000-acre spread in New Mexico where thousands of Boy Scouts with a taste for adventure have been congregating for more than 70 years.
No question about ‘dream job'
For Jones, Philmont was a magical place where he learned self-reliance, responsibility and leadership skills in the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
"He thrived out there," Jan Jones said.
She once asked her son what his dream job would be.
"Director of Philmont," he answered without pause.
Jones never got that chance. He died on Dec. 24, 2005 from injuries sustained in a one-person car wreck. He was 22.
It didn't take Jan Jones long to decide how she wanted to honor her son.
"Probably within the first hour, I knew I wanted something done for Philmont," she said.
A scholarship ... a recipient
With the help of friends and family, Jones created the Trey Jones Philmont Scholarship, which will help pay the way for a local Boy Scout affiliated with the Old Hickory Council to go to Philmont for a 12-day backpacking adventure. The scholarship will pay for the travel expenses.
"I hope it will flip that switch for someone like it did for Trey," Jones said. "He was such a changed person."
Last week, the scholarship committee chose Dusty Daub of Pfafftown as the first recipient of the scholarship. Dusty, 16, is a member of Troop 918, which is based at Pfafftown Christian Church.
Mike Lee, the troop leader, said that Dusty loves Scouting and the outdoors.
"He knows it's going to be fun," Lee said. "But he doesn't know how much."
The scholarship is being financed in part by the Trey Jones Gearhead Expo, which is put together by Don Wright of the Village Outdoor Shop in Reynolda Village.
The expo, now in its second year, is a gathering of outdoors-equipment vendors who will be selling their new spring gear and apparel.
Representatives from Mountain Hardware, Keen, Marmot, MSR, Icebreaker, Deuter and Thermarest are among those scheduled to set up at the expo, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 7 at the Village Outdoor Shop. Representatives from Philmont will also be available to talk with local Scouts who will be going to Philmont this summer.
More than 120 local Scouts and adult leaders will be traveling to Philmont this summer, Wright said.
A portion of the proceeds from the expo will help finance the scholarship endowment set up by the Jones family and another scholarship that Philmont officials established in Jones' honor.
Wright says he is happy to help with the expo. He had a long relationship with Trey Jones that dated to 1996 when he sold Jan Jones a kayak that she gave to her son.
"I watched him grow up," Wright said. "He was always coming into the store and buying gear."
Philmont, and Scouting in general, helped fill a hole in Jones' life after his father, Burton, died from melanoma in 1995. Jones was in third grade at the time.
"With Trey not having a father, I trusted those Scout leaders," Jan Jones said. "Those men became the adult role models in his life, no doubt about it."
Jones said that her son loved everything about Scouting. She laughed as she recalled her young son's fondness for his uniform. "He just loved that uniform," she said. "I think that, too, ties into the gearhead thing. It identified him as part of a group."
Jones' trips to Philmont began when he was 14 and ended the summer before his death. He took several extended backpacking treks, helped build trails and directed the Roving Outdoor Conservation School, which involved overseeing conservation projects on the Philmont property.
Mark Anderson, the director of Philmont Scout Ranch, said that Jones was kindhearted and industrious.
"People still comment about what kind of person he was, and that means you've left an impression beyond being just an acquaintance," Anderson said.
"You've been a person that someone appreciates," he said. "Trey is still remembered."
Jan Jones said she hopes that Philmont will give to Dusty what it gave her son. Last week, she visited with Dusty and shared with him some of the many pictures that her son took during his trips to Philmont.
He told her he plans to bring his camera and take pictures of everything.
"And when I get back," he told her, "I'll show you my pictures."

Okay so old school people call this area Mt. Rogers but what ever its name is it is some beautiful country.I have many pictures of the landscape of the area but not one of my photographs do it justice. The Troop has been blessed the past few weeks with the teachings of a wonderful Scout named Ted Holt. He is a Troop 934 Eagle Scout who is a student at Duke, but because he is going to spend this year at Oxford he has had the time to teach the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge to our boys. One of the requirements is to spend a night in a shelter that you have built yourself. He graciously came on our trek to educate, supervise, and provide encouragement to the boys working on the badge. I really enjoyed watching Mr. Holt working with the Scouts and I learned a thing or two myself. You can find some of the shelters that the boys built and the rest of the pictures on my Mt. Rogers Web Album. I almost forgot that we had some of the wild horses in the park that hung around with us at our campsite. You can see them too. Mt. Rogers

First three-state kidney transplant in U.S. involved Baptist Medical Center

Homer Brownlee Jr. pledged to his newlywed wife, Marilyn, that if she ever needed a kidney transplant, he'd be there for her.

Kidney problems run on both sides of their family. Marilyn's father died as a result of kidney disease, shortly after she married Brownlee in a ceremony that her father was too sick to attend.

Forty-three years later, Brownlee kept his promise -- only with a stranger's kidney.

Because his kidney turned out not to be an ideal match, the Brownlees, from Mobile, Ala., participated last Wednesday in a three-way, three-state kidney donation in the United States. Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center was one of the host sites for the surgeries.

Because Brownlee kept his promise to his wife, a local woman also has a new kidney.

Robin Graves of Winston-Salem received one of Brownlee's kidneys.

"I feel blessed to have had this man step up to the plate, as well as my best friend, to give me a chance at a better quality of life for myself and my two boys," Graves said yesterday with Brownlee sitting beside her hospital bed. She had been on dialysis for about four years.

Graves' best friend, Martha Hanson of Albuquerque, N.M., donated her kidney to a female recipient in Denver, whose husband traveled to the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham, Ala., to donate a kidney to Marilyn Brownlee.

Homer Brownlee was grateful that his wife is doing well with her new kidney.

"I know it's going to mean a whole new world for my wife," Brownlee said. "You could tell she had something wrong with her because she was so tired all the time.

"Even though it's not my kidney that went into her, I suspect I'll get a bunch of hugs and kisses when I see her later this week."

The matching of the three donor-recipient pairs came through the Alliance for Paired Donation, a nonprofit group based in Toledo, Ohio, that aims to shorten the waiting time for kidney-transplant recipients. The alliance said that, on average, about 12 people waiting for a transplant die every day.

According to the alliance, there are more than 76,600 patients awaiting a transplant in the United States. By comparison, there were 16,626 transplants performed nationwide in 2007.

Sharon Alcorn, the abdominal-transplant coordinator for Baptist, said that the hospital performed 200 kidney transplants in fiscal 2007-08, which ended June 30.

The goal is to expand the donation possibilities for people who are willing to donate a kidney for a family member or friend, but are incompatible with that person.

According to WebMD.com, transplants using a kidney from a first-degree relative, such as father, mother, brother or sister, are the most successful. But a family member is not always the best match, as the key to success is having the closest possible blood and tissue matches.

In the Brownlees' case, a final test done the day before his wife's transplant surgery was scheduled in July 2007 ruled him out as a donor.

"When the whole batch of doctors handling the surgery come into the room, you know the news is not good," Brownlee said. "Yet, I knew there was going to be a kidney out there for her, and I still was willing to donate one of mine to someone who I was a good match for."

The key to the three-way donation was that, for ethical reasons, each donor had to be put under anesthesia at the same time even though the surgeries were taking place in Winston-Salem, Birmingham and Aurora, Colo.

That way, if one donor had backed out, all of the surgeries would have been called off.

"Simple two-way swaps are pretty easy to arrange," said Dr. Michael Rees, the medical director for the alliance. "This exchange was a bit more complicated because it involved three pairs whose recipients could not have found a match if we had only performed two-way exchanges.

"The fact that each center is in a different state and time zone made the logistics more challenging."

Brownlee said he had to go through a large battery of tests over the course of a year before he was deemed healthy enough to donate his kidney to Graves.

"I think they checked everything out in me and on me except my toenails, and they may still come after them before I leave," he said.

"I knew once I was cleared the first time to be a donor that I had to do it -- no backing out. Even though it was a roundabout way of getting Marilyn her kidney, it's all been worth it."

Dr. Carl Westcott, a member of Baptist's laparoscopic-surgery service who performed the surgery on Brownlee, said he hopes that more three-way transplants can be done.

"It's difficult for the donor since they likely are away from their family and community support when they undergo the surgery," Westcott said.

"But with this method in place, we hope it will make a dent in the waiting list for transplants since living donated kidneys tend to last twice as long as those taken from a cadaver."

Graves said she hopes that her story will inspire people "to not let the fear of donating a kidney stop them from giving the gift of life to others."

"Being on dialysis, while it keeps you alive, is a terrible quality of life because it makes you so weak," Graves said. "Even then, if a transplant hadn't come along, eventually I knew I was going to die.

"Even though it will take me months to recover, mentally I know I have my life back. I will be able to attend school functions for my sons that I had been too sick to attend in recent years."

Taking Brownlee's hand in hers, Graves said that "this man, who didn't know me a week ago, has blessed my life so richly. I'm just glad that in this same way, his wife has been blessed, too."

How To Contact Your Boy At Camp

I like to write a short e-mail to my son each day when he is at camp and I just wanted to make sure that you knew how to send them a note. I have cut and pasted from the Raven Knob website.

Please send mail addressed as follows:

Please be sure to include the Scout’s unit number on all mail; this will make sure
it is routed to the proper mailbox. Also include a return address in case a letter arrives
at camp after the Scout has left. Mail service is dependable, but it is recommended
that mail not be sent to camp later than the Wednesday while the unit is at camp. Mail
can take from two to four days to reach camp. Any letters or packages that contain
currency or valuables should be insured.

Scouts are able to receive Internet messages while at camp. Messages may be
sent through the camp’s web site (www. ravenknob.com). Enter the unit Number,
Scout name, and message in the form provided. All messages will be printed and
delivered to the unit mailboxes with regular mail and messages.

Should someone at camp need to be contacted, the camp telephone number
is (336) 352-4307. This phone is located in the camp office, and is manned from
8:00a.m. until 10:00p.m., with the exception of meals and campfires. There may be
a staff member in the office in the evening or at other times as well. Please note, however,
that this is the camp’s business phone and parents will not be able to talk to their
children. The staff member will take a message and deliver it to the unit mailbox.
Of course, emergency messages, will be delivered as soon as possible.

If your child takes his medication everyday at breakfast then you need to have 6 copies of the form and circle breakfast on everyone and circle Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc., for each individual day. Then put a form and the medication in an individual ziplock bag for each day. If your child takes a medication at breakfast and supper you will need 12 ziplock bags (breakfast Mon-Sat, supper Sun-Fri). Each dose of medication requires its own ziplock bag, medication, and form inside.

Summer Camp e-mails

Scouts/families-

Two crews are safely back from a fantastic adventure at Philmont. Look for the shiny new belt buckles and arrowhead patches and ask the wearer about his trip. A crew leaves today for Seabase in FL to undertake a seafaring trek and do some valuable recon for the troop. Pray for their safe passage and a worthwhile trip.

Coming up on 8/22-24 is the Cherokee/Smokemont trip. This will include camping in a beautiful campsite in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, tubing in Deep Creek (it's not very deep), visiting the Cherokee Village and seeing the drama "Unto These Hills". It is a great trip to enjoy just before school starts back. Flyer attached.

Space is limited, so please bring your money for this trip to the departure for summer camp and see Mr. Spiegelman. If you can't do this, make sure you email me that you want to come. Spaces go to the first paid.

Also attached is the adult coverage list for CRK. I hope to be there more than shown but we probably need 1 more adult for Sun-Wed nights. I believe we have 1 or more additional adults coming in for the 2nd half of the week. (Cavenaugh or Pfundstein please confirm) . We have to pay for all adults and we have a program to run, so please do not come up except on Sunday afternoon and Wed night unless you contact me and I put you on the list. There will be no place for unreserved bodies at meals. Bill Marvin is the trip leader, and in my absence, will have the final say on all matters.

Here are the Summer Camp particulars:

1) Meet 11:00 Sunday at MT Tabor HIGH SCHOOL bus pickup. Do not come to the church.
2) 11:30 am pickup the following Saturday (7/19) at the CHURCH. We will all come back together. Absolutely no early pickups for any reason.
3) No electronics, phones or open-toed shoes
4) If your health form is not current, we can not let you on the bus. Please make sure you sign and date it.
5) Bring money for Troop pictures ($10 and you will want one) and T-shirts ($5) Also, a little walking around money will be useful for the trading post this coming week.
6) Potluck dinner at the chapel Wednesday, 5:45, eat at 6:00. Bring lots of food and carpool if you can.
7) packing party 1-1:30 pm Sat 7/12. Your attendance would be helpful
Please let me know if you can come.
8) We need a volunteer to purchase snacks and supplies to load on Saturday.
Let me know if you would like to volunteer.

SUNDAY at 11:00-
Make sure you check in with Mr. Marvin and Dr. Gregory. If you have any prescription medicine, you must have it prepackaged by dosage in Ziplocs with your name, troop, and the type of med on it.

Once you enter camp, come through main gate, continue past admin building, stay straight down the hill. At the bottom, you will see a log cabin. Proceed just past it (straight ahead) and park at the bridge across Lake Watson. That will lead you to the chapel and our picnic.

Wednesday night's campfire will go until about 9:30 for the first part and until 10:15 for the second part (known as the Vigil tapout). Many people choose to leave between the two.

Here is some additional information about camp.

• On Sunday Departure - Wear Class A to camp including scout shorts, belt, and scout socks. Wear your troop neckerchief. Bring a bag lunch with you. The first meal they serve is supper.
• Footlockers – can be purchased at Space Savers on Strafford and Wal-Mart.
• Money – Spending Money – Need some for the Canteen but the Kids can buy too much junk food.
• Pocket knife – Leaders can take up marked (name on) pocketknives so when the boys get their Toten chip they don’ have to go buy one.
• Mail or E-mail – Parents can mail or e-mail the boys. Go to www.ravenknob.com
• Wednesday Pot Luck – Bring a homemade dish, a pizza, KFC, anything. The boys will eat a lot and there is presentation at the OA arena after dinner.

Summer Camp Guide

( Developed for especially for Raven Scouts )

Hope you are excited about camp next

week! It is going to be a blast. I have been getting a lot of great questions from

parents…so I put this basic Summer Camp guide for you. Hopefully it answers many of

your questions. All the new Ravens will be doing the same senior Raven program which works on a lot of their First Class requirements. They should be aware of other merit badge sessions because next year they will get to pick several of the merit badges they want to take at camp.

Depart For Camp

Meet at the Bus Lot at Mount Tabor High School at 11:00am on Sunday, July 13. You need to

check-in, make sure you have all the necessary paperwork completed and load their footlocker.

Footlocker should be locked. Give Mr. Helms extra key or combination. T934 t-shirts are usually

on sale for $10. Bring a bag lunch.

Arrive Back From Camp

Meet at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church at 11:00am on Saturday, July 19 to pick up your

Scout.

Adult Leaders

There will be adult leaders in camp for the entire week and there will be quite a few other adult

leaders who will be there in "shifts" throughout the week.

Tent Mates

There a two Scouts per tent. Scouts can pick who they want to tent with.

Uniforms at Camp

Class-A uniforms should be worn as we travel to camp. When we get there, we first go through

the registration process after which a group picture of the troop is taken. Class-A uniforms are

worn to dinner each night and to the Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday night campfires. Bring a

hanger so it can be kept as neat as possible.

Class-B uniforms will be worn when they are not wearing Class-A uniforms. The Class-B is a

Scout t-shirt or regular t-shirts with their Scout shorts or scout-like cargo shorts.

Group Picture

8x10 copies can be purchased for $10, but they must be requested and paid for in advance.

Messages

Scouts may receive electronic messages at camp.

3. Click on "Send Scouts Messages" in left hand panel.

4. Select the Troop 934

5. Complete form and send message (messages will be printed and distributed to scout by the

troop leaders)

Directions to Camp Raven Knob: (CARPOOLING IS STRONGLY SUGGESTED)

Take 52-North (toward Mt. Airy) to I-74 (toward I-77). Exit I-74 on Highway 89 and turn left (west

toward Sparta). The next left turn off of 89 is Ladonia Church. It is approximately 3 1/2 miles (just

after passing a concrete silo on the left). There is a small sign for Camp Raven Knob. This is a

little curvy road that dead-ends at a stop sign. Turn left at the dead end you will turn L on Hidden

Valley for only a couple hundred yards before you veer off to the right on the camp road.

Parking

There is some limited parking space at the camp but the very best place to park is just before

entering the camp gates. There is a short path that leads to the camp. There will be a lot of

visitors and a lot of cars in camp that night, and this will prevent our parents from having to drive

all the way into camp and the traffic turmoil.

Directions to Campsite

Should you wish to visit the Troop 934 campsite (Deer Valley) prior to dinner, follow the same

directions except turn left at the bottom of the hill just in front of the log cabin. Go about 100 yards

+/-, and turn left again just before reaching the waterfall (seen on your right). Follow this road to

the end and park. It is better to visit the campsite while it is light and early, it is tricky after

campfire for numerous reasons.

Wednesday Family Night

We will meet at 6pm for supper at the chapel not at the campsite. You might want to bethere closer to 5:45pm to set up for the potluck dinner. Please bring a dish bigenough for your family and a few more.There will be some very hungry boys there and a lot of family members. To get to the chapel, come straight into camp, ignore all turns, come down the hill past the brown administration building. At the bottom of the hill go straight, proceed just past the log cabin and park in the grass on your left. You should see a covered bridge in front of you which will lead you (on foot) to the chapel.

Campfire Program (after dinner)

Following dinner, there will be a Campfire, Order of the Arrow Ceremony, and an OA Vigil

Ceremony at the OA Arena. This is a very impressive ceremony that you will not want to miss!

The campfire program is very interesting and will include the acknowledgement (tapout) of the

boys who have been elected into the Order of the Arrow this year. Plan to leave about 9pm if you

don't stay for the special Vigil tap and 10pm if you do. Due to our week in camp coinciding with

the annual Vigil tap, there will be extra traffic in camp. Therefore, it is advised to carpool when

possible.

Troop-

1) Remember, next Monday is a special Eagle Court of Honor instead of a regular meeting. Wear class A (including sash) and bring parents. There will be refreshments afterward. Also, there will be an opportunity to get a scoutmaster conference and/or board of review after the ceremony. THERE WILL BE NO PLC THIS WEEK. Program starts at 7pm in the sanctuary.

2) Monday, 6/9 is our last regular meeting of this school year. We will be having the remainder of our SM conferences and BORs that day as well as wrapping up some merit badges and packing for Bear Island.

3) The Bear Island trip is still accepting participants. This is one of the most fun trips we do. First-in $$ grabs the slots. Events include spending Saturday on a 74 ft schooner. Mr. Spiegelman will probably be accepting $ at the COH if you want to bring it.

4) The 6/16 meeting is our Spring Court of Honor (it will move quickly) to be followed by a camp meeting. The camp meeting is required for scouts and at least one parent of anyone who is attending Camp Raven Knob this summer for the first time with the troop. If this is not your first time but you are not 100% sure of how things work,please attend also. Even with part of the troop gone to Sea Base and two crews freshly returned from Philmont, it appears that we are taking over 50 scouts this year. Once again due to the work involved, troop spirit, and teambuilding, it is imperative that we leave as a troop on Sunday and return as a troop on Saturday. Please do not plan to pick your son up early.

Lots of things are going on. Camping merit badge had a fantastic trip at Shining Rock Wilderness last weekend and the Philmont crews are doing team building prior to our departure on 6/20. Thanks to all that participated in our chicken sale. We sold 200 halves, some drinks, and the remainder of our coffee.
